Kinetic Description of Electron-proton Instability in High-intensity Linacs and Storage Rings

چکیده
The Vlasov-Maxwell equations are used to investigate properties of the electron-ion two-stream instability for a continuous, high-intensity ion beam propagating in the zdirection with directed axial velocity Vb = βbc through a background population of (stationary) electrons. The analysis is carried out for arbitrary beam intensity, consistent with transverse confinement of the beam particles, and arbitrary fractional charge neutralization. Stability properties are calculated for dipole perturbations with azimuthal mode number ` = 1 about monoenergetic ion and electron distribution functions.

Superconducting Rf - New Directions*
In the last two years, there has been substantial progress in superconducting accelerator technology both in long term operation at many facilities as well as in high gradients at many laboratories. These rapid advances have made RF superconductivity an enabling technology for a variety of new applications. In high energy physics, low frequency (200 400 MHz) cavities are envisioned to acceler...
متن کاملEUROPEAN ORGANIZATION FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH CERN-SL DIVISION CERN-SL-2000- 075 (AP) Transverse Mode Coupling Instabilities
Transverse Mode Coupling Instabilities (TMCI) emerged between 1974 and 1980 as the main limitation of dense bunches in electron synchrotrons and storage rings. A two-particle model allows one to calculate the Beam Break-Up (BBU) instability in linacs. Extending this to synchrotrons show that the BBU instability is suppressed below a threshold intensity by synchrotron oscillations. The classical...

Many of the more than 40 operational light sources around the world have achieved performance levels that exceed initial design goals. These accomplishments are reviewed, along with concepts and proposals for sources with performance levels exceeding those of present sources. These include storage rings with lower electron-beam emittance than present third-generation rings and free-electron las...

According to the international accelerator project at GSI, the double synchrotron SIS100/300 and a chain of storage rings will be built (using the present GSI synchrotron SIS18 as injector) in order to achieve high intensity and high energy heavy ion pulses for nuclear or plasma physics studies or anti-proton production. Dynamic vacuum instability and electron cloud are potential intensity limi...
